When I met Alice she was the Northwest Regional Aerobics Dance Instructor Champion for her age group. I was once a regional champion myself for bicycle road racing. I had no idea there was such a competition or title for aerobics dance Instructors, but she could jump and kick higher than anyone that I had ever seen. And when I put her on the back of a tandem bicycle, I found at right around 100 pounds… that she had an excellent power to weight ratio.
We met on a blind date at the Denny’s restaurant that used to be across the street from the Federal Way Mall. When I approached the entrance there was a young woman in a dress looking into the restaurant. I said, “Alice?” and she turned around. In front of me was the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen.
But it was like a form of like DeJa’Vu. I had seen her years before in the Tacoma Mall near JC Penny’s department store. At that time, I was working at our small lumber remanufacturing plant and was in my ragged work clothes. I thought that she was striking and that I would never see her again. But a little later in the day when I was doing my real shopping at the Value Village that used to be in South Tacoma two doors down from the Southwell’s Bicycle Shop… I came around the end of an aisle and there she was. She smiled at me, but I was completely paralyzed… I thought about her for years after that with regret.
So, years later I found the same woman waiting to see me in front of the Denny’s Restaurant in Federal Way. It was a very cold, and dark evening in the middle of January. Her cheeks were rosy from the cold and her hair was being blown by the wind. I knew immediately that I had been given another chance. We were always meant to be together. God willing this was going to be the woman that I would spend the rest of my life with.
Alice’s Song
Lyrics
[Verse – Alice]
I was caring for patients in a white uniform
Long dark hair blown in a winter storm
A champion of rhythm in a dance-filled haze
But then you walked in and set my heart ablaze
[Verse – Steve]
I rode through life in break away leads
Cutting through the wind on two-wheeled steeds
A firefighter’s courage
But my heart stood still
When I saw you there
It was fate’s own thrill
[Chorus – Alice]
From the first spark to a glowing flame
We’re growing old
But we’re still the same
Hand in hand through the highs and lows
Thirty-five years and our love still grows
[Verse – Steve]
Your laugh
Your smile
They still take me back
To the day we met
at Dennys for a snack
I called your name
you turned around
and nothing was the same
It was love at first sight
And my endless delight
[Verse – Steve]
You danced through my mind like a dream on fire
Long legs and grace
You’re my heart’s desire
Together we built a life so true
And every day
I fall more for you
[Bridge – Both]
Time’s lines may show
But we don’t care
In every wrinkle
There’s a story to share
From fire to rhythm
From dance to race
In your arms
I’ve found my perfect place
